While many people associate Gaelic only with the Highlands and Islands, the reality is that most people who speak or understand Gaelic now live outside the traditional Gaidhealtachd areas, with large concentrations in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
In our own area, indeed, the 2001 census figures reveal that there were almost 3,700 people who could understand Gaelic in either written or spoken form.
The river Clyde has a long tradition as a point of arrival and departure for Gaels travelling between the islands and the central belt, for work or family reasons, as well as a point of embarkation for a new life in distant lands.
